Living, loving, learning with thankfulness and hope

Courageous Advocacy and Global Neighbours

‘Courageous advocate is someone who champions a cause which is special and meaningful to them.’ It involves being courageous enough to speak out against injustice and the concerns we have for our world and each other. We help our pupils to become informed about issues that people across the world are facing and help them to have ideas and action ways in which they can help. We encourage our children to be courageous advocates, not just locally, but nationally and globally and help them to see the interconnectedness of their actions.

It is important for our children to realise their role as part of a community; to take responsibility, to be able to look after themselves and others and foster an understanding of their importance, in the impact and influence they can have. We understand how our school values enables us to love others and in thankfulness for all we have extend hope.

We have a number of different ways in which children develop their courageous advocacy skills;

  • Across the school our children consider the 17 World development goals and how these actions can help meet these. In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals. These goals aim to create a better world by 2030, by ending poverty, fighting inequality and addressing the urgency of climate change. These goals form a basis for many of the courageous advocacy opportunities which link to our curriculum.

Curriculum Values and Attributes

 Please click on the year group link below to see an overview of their Values and Attributes curriculum.

  • There is opportunity within lessons for children to further suggest their ideas in relation to issues they have discovered

  • After watching the World’s greatest lesson each class has decided on a cause they wish to champion and these are developing through a second year. Below is an example of a Year 1 project concerning littering, pollution and protecting life on land.

  • Courageous Advocacy and Global Neighbours themes are developed in our collective worship times and the children have opportunities to act on these.

  • Our school development team also has opportunities to lead school projects.

e.g. Battery recycling / Toilet twinning

When we undertake courageous advocacy, they broadly fit in to the following areas;

  • Awareness raising
  • Community influencing
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Consumer power
  • Engaging with decision makers

We support a range of charities locally, nationally and globally. Some of these have included:
